U.S. Springfield Model 1866 Allin Conversion 2nd Model .50-70

This is a U.S. Springfield Model 1866 Second Model Allin Conversion in .50-70 Government, dating to about 1866, with a 36.5-inch round sleeved barrel and no serial number. The seller grades it very fine. The barrel remains very bright with only small spots of staining, the trapdoor retains roughly half of its arsenal black finish, the wood is excellent with sharp cartouches, and the bore is excellent.

The Model 1866 is best known from the Wagon Box Fight of August 2, 1867, the action most associated with this rifle. It is a collector's piece rather than a working hunting gun, and most buyers will want it for the cartouches, the surviving arsenal finish and the bright barrel rather than for the field. A New Mexico owner should treat the .50-70 as a display and study piece, and the condition described here is what will arrive at the dealer.
