A Portuguese-contract Steyr Model 1886 Kropatschek, serial A846, made around 1886 by Österreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft at Steyr, chambered in 8x60mmR Kropatschek with a 32-inch round barrel. Roughly 60 percent of the finish survives, thinner on the barrel and receiver; the bolt is non-matching, and the bore and rifling remain strong. The stock keeps attractive original cartouches and has an old repair at the toe running from the sling swivel toward the buttplate. The action is smooth and functions correctly.
The Model 1886 marks Portugal's adoption of the Kropatschek tubular-magazine repeater, which is the interest here for a New Mexico collector. This is a late-19th-century European military rifle with its character intact rather than a hunting rifle for the fall draws, and the honest condition report, with a non-matching bolt and a documented stock repair, lets a buyer judge it on the facts. The 32-inch barrel gives it full infantry-rifle length.
