A Springfield Armory M1 Garand, serial 3805563, made around June 1945 in the last weeks of the war, chambered in .30-06 with a 24-inch round barrel. The barrel is stamped D6535448 45 MD 34 S.A. 12-52, which marks it as a later Springfield replacement. The bore shows frosting and scattered oxidation, but the rifling is still visible. The operating rod has been cut in the standard post-war update, several parts keep their S.A. markings, and the stock carries the nicks, dings and scratches of military handling. The action is smooth and works correctly.
This Garand represents a late-war rifle that went back through arsenal updating and kept serving. For New Mexico owners it is a shooter and collector piece first, but a semi-automatic .30-06 loaded with expanding bullets does meet the state's big-game rule; surplus full metal jacket is not legal for deer or elk. Rifle big-game hunts mostly fall from October through December under their hunt codes.
