This Colt Officers Model Target in .38 Special is a Third Issue revolver made around 1948. The 6-inch barrel has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling, and the gun carries adjustable front and rear sights. The left side of the barrel reads OFFICERS MODEL TARGET over .38 SPECIAL CTG. The barrel and frame sides keep about 99 percent of their bright Colt blue, while the top of the frame through the trigger guard has the dull non-reflective finish. The backstrap and trigger are grooved, the hammer sides are bright with dull-blue edges, and the checkered brown Colt-logo plastic grips show no cracks or chips. The action works correctly.
For a New Mexico collector this is an early post-war Colt target revolver in high original condition, the kind that belongs in a cabinet more than a range bag. A .38 Special with adjustable sights still shoots well, and the state's lack of registration makes adding it to a collection a private matter.
